In his book, THE SLIGHT EDGE, Turning Simple Disciplines INTO Massive Success & Happiness, Jeff Olson writes about how doing small simple daily disciplines everyday will take you where you want to go. He states that for a goal to come true:
You must make it specific, give it a deadline, and write it down.
You must look at it every day.
You must have a plan to start with.
Step 1: Writing It Down
The most critical skill to turn dreams into reality is the skill of envisioning; envisioning you stepping into the future.
What is the ideal work-life balance, the ideal brand/reputation, ideal projects, ideal working environment, ideal relationships, and the ideal job?
What’s the career dream that has been put on the back burner?
If there were a long-kept secret wish about your work-life, what would that be?
What impact or living legacy would you like to make?
Now- what would having those things in your career bring to you, to your employer, and to your family?
These dreams may be big or small, but write them down. Write a list of them as you brainstorm. Make them specific, vivid with pictures – a dream board if you will. This is the first and most critical step to turn your dreams into reality.
Step 2: Look At It Every Day
Jeff Olson states “The single most compelling reason for writing down your dreams is so you can look at them and read them every day. The reason you need to look at them every day is the same reason you need to keep yourself in the company of positive people: you need to counteract the force of gravity.”
Too many things get in the way of staying focused on what it is we want to achieve. We tend to stay in our same place of where it is comfortable, whether it is staying stuck in a passionless job where talents are wasted, or with “friends” who are nay-sayers that pull us down.
In order to grow, there needs to be change. Step out of the comfort zone, look at your dreams every day, close your eyes and visualize your dreams as reality!
Step 3: Start With A Plan
This is usually the place where people get stuck. A plan is normally thought of as THE plan that will get you to where you want to be when in fact, a plan is just the starting point. “You have to start with a plan, but the plan you start with will not be the plan that gets you there.” Jeff Olson.
The power of the plan is that you begin! Doing something, taking action is actually where that power comes from. So don’t put too much time into making the “perfect” plan.
